Outdoor Coffee Table

When commissioned to design a coffee table for an outdoor patio, two considerations immediately came to mind: selecting a timber capable of withstanding the elements and challenging the often utilitarian nature of outdoor furniture.

Kiaat, also known as African teak, was the natural choice for the project. Renowned for its durability, stability, and low shrinkage rate, it is exceptionally well suited to outdoor environments while possessing a richness and character worthy of fine furniture.

Beyond material selection, the design set out to question the assumption that outdoor furniture must be purely functional or visually unrefined. Whether placed indoors or outdoors, furniture should retain a sense of craftsmanship, elegance, and permanence. This belief became the guiding principle behind the piece.

The client afforded me considerable creative freedom—an opportunity I always value—which allowed the design to explore the balance between robustness and refinement. Drawing inspiration from the strong geometric forms and substantial proportions often associated with outdoor furniture, I chose to embrace these qualities while introducing a greater sense of sophistication, lightness, and detail.

Visible joinery plays a central role in achieving this balance. Half-lap dovetails, through tenons, and exposed dowel pins within the tabletop celebrate the craftsmanship behind the piece, elevating its construction into a defining design feature. These details bring a level of precision and refinement that contrasts beautifully with the table’s bold architectural form.

The result is a piece that bridges two worlds: durable enough for outdoor living, yet crafted with the care, elegance, and attention to detail typically reserved for fine furniture.
